If you travel for work, you know how physically, mentally and emotionally taxing it can be. A departure from your normal routine can be difficult for many reasons. You may be on a different time zone or have a disrupted sleep schedule from flights or the nature of not sleeping in your own bed. Your typical food and exercise options are not available to you, you’re separated from your loved ones and friends and you’re trying to get work done in a totally new environment. Though your discomfort may make you want to eat a room service cheeseburger in bed, you’ll feel much better if you keep up with your healthy habits. Here’s how to do it.
1. Scope out workout options
Before you leave for your work trip, do a little bit of research. Find out if your hotel has a gym or pool for laps. Check if there are any fitness studios that offer classes nearby. There are many apps to discover and book classes near your location.
2. Prioritize exercise
Thirty minutes of exercise may be more beneficial than 30 more minutes of sleep, so make your workout a priority even if you have to wake up a bit earlier to get it in.
3. Eat a balanced breakfast
Before you dive head-first into work, make sure to eat a healthy breakfast. Steer clear of hotel buffet items like bacon and sausage and opt for fresh fruit, yogurt, whole grains and nuts.
4. Stay hydrated
When you’re going all day, it’s important to drink water throughout your meetings and workshops.
5. Clock enough sleep hours
Happy hours and socializing with coworkers are fun, but not at the expense of a good night’s sleep. If you need eight hours, work backwards and figure out what time you need to be in bed to get all your slumber in.
